Heaven

1. The ultimate Heaven is a physical, resurrected New Earth, not an ethereal cloud-world.

What God made us to desire, and therefore what we do desire if we admit it, is exactly what he promises to those who follow Jesus Christ: a resurrected life in a resurrected body, with the resurrected Christ on a resurrected Earth.

Our true destination. Most Christians mistakenly view Heaven as an endless, disembodied church service in the clouds, a concept that breeds dread rather than anticipation. The Bible, however, promises a physical, tangible future on a resurrected Earth. God's original design for humanity was to live on Earth, and He has never abandoned that plan.

The physical reality. A place is by nature physical, and because human beings are designed as physical-spiritual unities, we require a physical environment to thrive. The New Earth will feature familiar, tangible elements:

• Soil, water, rocks, and atmosphere
• Mountains, rivers, trees, and flowers
• Cities, buildings, and streets

Familiar yet perfected. This means that our eternal home will not be an alien, unrecognizable realm. Instead, it will be a restored, sinless version of the world we already know and love, free from the Curse.

2. Christoplatonism is a heresy that falsely separates the spiritual from the physical.

Trying to develop an appetite for a disembodied existence in a nonphysical Heaven is like trying to develop an appetite for gravel.

The Platonic deception. For centuries, the Christian church has been infected by "Christoplatonism"—a blend of Christian theology and Platonic philosophy. This view falsely assumes that the spirit is inherently good and the material world is inherently evil or unspiritual. Consequently, believers spiritualize or ignore biblical teachings about the physical resurrection and the New Earth.

God's physical design. God created the physical universe and pronounced it "very good." The Incarnation—God becoming a physical man in Jesus Christ—proves that the material realm is sacred to God. Key errors of Christoplatonism include:

• Viewing the body as a temporary prison for the soul
• Believing that spiritual maturity requires shunning physical pleasures
• Assuming that Heaven must be entirely non-physical to be holy

A unified cosmos. By recognizing Christoplatonism as a heresy, we can reclaim the biblical truth that God intends to redeem both our spirits and our bodies, uniting Heaven and Earth in a physical, holy, and joyful reality.

3. The present Heaven is a temporary, intermediate state awaiting the final resurrection.

The present Heaven is a temporary lodging, a waiting place until the return of Christ and our bodily resurrection.

The intermediate state. When a believer dies, their spirit immediately goes to be with Christ in what theologians call the "intermediate" or "present" Heaven. While this state is "better by far" than our current life under the Curse, it is not our final destination. It is a temporary resting place where disembodied spirits await their physical resurrection.

A stop along the way. To understand this, consider the analogy of traveling to a permanent home but stopping at a comfortable hotel along the way. The present Heaven is the hotel; the New Earth is the permanent home. Key distinctions include:

• The present Heaven is in the angelic, invisible realm
• The future Heaven will be located on the physical New Earth
• The present Heaven coexists with an Earth still under the Curse

Relocation of God's throne. Ultimately, the present Heaven will be relocated to the New Earth when the New Jerusalem descends. God will come down to live with us in our resurrected home forever.

4. Resurrection bodies are physical, recognizable, and possess continuity of identity and memory.

In my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another.

Physical resurrection. Resurrection does not mean becoming a ghost; it means receiving a physical, immortal body of flesh and bones, modeled after Christ's resurrected body. Our new bodies will be free from disease, injury, and the limitations of the Curse, yet they will be fundamentally continuous with our current bodies.

Redemptive continuity. God does not scrap His original creation; He restores it. This means you will still be you in Heaven, with your unique identity, personality, and memories intact. Consider these truths:

• We will have our own names and recognizable physical features
• We will remember our lives, relationships, and choices on Earth
• Our unique genetic codes and personalities will be perfected, not erased

The ultimate upgrade. Your resurrection body will be the perfect, sinless version of the body God designed for you. It will possess enhanced senses and abilities, allowing you to experience the physical universe with unprecedented vitality.

5. God's redemptive plan is to restore and renew the physical Earth, not annihilate it.

God is the ultimate salvage artist. He loves to restore things to their original condition—and make them even better.

The cosmic salvage. Many Christians believe God will completely destroy the Earth and abandon His original creation. However, the biblical words for salvation—such as redeem, restore, reconcile, and renew—all imply a return to an originally good state. God will purify the Earth with fire, cleansing it of sin and the Curse, and resurrecting it as the New Earth.

Satan's defeat. If God had to annihilate the Earth and start over, Satan would have won a victory by permanently ruining God's original handiwork. Instead, Christ's redemption is a total victory that reclaims every square inch of the physical cosmos. Key aspects of this restoration include:

• The removal of the Curse from the ground and nature
• The transformation of the old Earth into the New Earth
• The reconciliation of all things in Heaven and on Earth under Christ

A familiar home. Because the New Earth is the old Earth restored, we can look at the beauty of our current world as a preview of our eternal home, free from the decay of sin.

6. The New Jerusalem is a literal, magnificent, and massive city of culture and community.

The New Jerusalem will be the benefit of all people groups and their rulers... the city has become what those who loved it always dreamed and what in their dreams she always was.

A physical metropolis. The capital of the New Earth is the New Jerusalem, a literal, physical city currently located in the present Heaven. When it descends to the New Earth, it will serve as the center of God's global government and human culture. It is described with immense, physical dimensions:

• A perfect cube measuring 1,400 miles in each direction
• Walls made of jasper and twelve foundations decorated with precious stones
• Twelve gates made of single pearls that will never be shut

The perfect city. This city will combine the best of natural beauty and human architecture. It will feature a crystal-clear river of life flowing from God's throne and the tree of life bearing twelve crops of fruit. It will have all the advantages of a bustling metropolis—culture, art, and community—with none of the crime, pollution, or decay.

A home for the nations. The New Jerusalem will be a place of rich diversity, where the kings of the Earth bring their cultural treasures and the nations walk in the light of God's glory.

7. We will recognize and enjoy deep, restored relationships with family and friends.

Our parting is not the end of our relationship, only an interruption. We have not 'lost' them, because we know where they are.

Eternal reunions. Because we maintain our identities and memories, we will easily recognize and reunite with our loved ones in Heaven. Our relationships will be deeper, richer, and entirely free from the misunderstandings, jealousy, and sin that plague us on Earth. We will pick up our friendships right where they left off.

One great family. While Jesus taught that human marriage will end in Heaven, this is because it will be fulfilled by the ultimate marriage between Christ and His church. We will not lose intimacy; rather, we will gain a far greater, all-encompassing family. Key relational truths include:

• We will recognize and converse with biblical figures and historical saints
• We will share meals, stories, and adventures with our friends
• Parents will be reunited with infants and children who died prematurely

No cliques or isolation. In Heaven, there will be no exclusive circles or loneliness. We will love everyone perfectly, though we may still enjoy special, deep friendships with those we shared history with on Earth.

8. Animals, including our beloved pets, will inhabit the New Earth.

If God brings our pets back to life, it wouldn't surprise me. It would be just like Him. It would be totally in keeping with His generous character.

Animals in Paradise. God created animals as part of His "very good" Edenic design, and He has never revoked their place in His creation. The prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel describe a New Earth filled with peaceful, harmonious animal life. Because animals fell under the Curse due to human sin, they will also be delivered from decay through our resurrection.

The covenant with animals. God's care for animals is woven throughout Scripture. He saved them on the ark and included them in His covenant with Noah. On the New Earth, we can expect:

• Extinct animals, including dinosaurs, to be restored
• Predators like lions and wolves to live peacefully as vegetarians
• A restored, harmonious relationship between humans and beasts

Our pets restored. Because God is a lavish giver who delights in our joy, it is highly probable that He will restore our beloved pets to live with us on the New Earth. Their presence will be a whimsical, joyful expression of His extravagant grace.

9. Heaven will be an active realm of meaningful work, ruling, and creative culture.

The work on the other side, whatever be its character, will be adapted to each one's special aptitude and powers.

The joy of work. Many assume Heaven is a place of eternal idleness, but God created Adam to work and care for the Garden before sin entered the world. On the New Earth, we will be active, productive, and creative. We will serve God through meaningful work that never causes fatigue, frustration, or burnout.

Ruling with Christ. God's original mandate for humanity was to exercise righteous dominion over the Earth. In Heaven, we will fulfill this calling by reigning as kings and queens under Christ. Our service will include:

• Governing cities, nations, and perhaps other planets
• Managing God's vast, resurrected assets and resources
• Developing a sinless, God-glorifying human culture

Unleashed creativity. We will use our resurrected minds and bodies to design, build, write, paint, and make music. Our cultural achievements will be purified of sin and offered as tribute to the King of kings.

10. We will never stop learning, exploring, and discovering in a progressive eternity.

We will constantly be more amazed with God, more in love with God, and thus ever more relishing his presence and our relationship with him.

Progressive learning. We will not become omniscient in Heaven; only God is all-knowing. As finite creatures, we will spend eternity learning, growing, and discovering new truths about God, His creation, and His history. This means Heaven will feature ongoing intellectual stimulation and exciting research.

Exploring the cosmos. The "new heavens" include the vast expanse of the physical universe. We will have eternity to explore resurrected galaxies, stars, and planets. Our learning will involve:

• Studying the sciences, history, and arts without the limits of the Curse
• Reading books in Heaven's libraries and writing new ones
• Discussing deep theological and philosophical truths with historical giants

Endless discovery. Because God is infinite, our exploration of His character and His creation will never reach a limit. Every day on the New Earth will bring fresh, delightful surprises, ensuring we will never be bored.

11. Beholding the face of God is the ultimate source of all secondary joys.

God himself is the great good which they are brought to the possession and enjoyment of by redemption.

The Beatific Vision. The greatest joy of Heaven will be seeing God face-to-face. Because we will be made fully righteous in Christ, we will be able to behold God's unapproachable light and live. This "happy-making sight" will be the central focus of our eternal existence, satisfying our deepest spiritual thirst.

The source of all joy. We do not have to choose between loving God and enjoying His creation. All secondary joys—such as friendship, nature, food, and art—are streams that flow from God, the ultimate fountain. When we enjoy these gifts, we are enjoying God Himself. In Heaven, we will:

• See God's attributes reflected in every physical object and creature
• Worship Him spontaneously and joyfully in everything we do
• Experience an intimate, face-to-face relationship with Jesus Christ

A God-centered reality. Our lives will be completely reoriented around Christ. He will be our center of gravity, and our love for Him will fuel our love for everything and everyone else in His Kingdom.

12. Heaven is not our default destination; we must actively choose Christ to enter.

The price has been paid. But still, we must choose. Like any gift, forgiveness can be offered, but it isn't ours until we choose to receive it.

The default destination. Because of our sin, we are naturally separated from a holy God. Heaven is not our default destination; Hell is. Unless our sin problem is resolved through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we cannot enter God's presence or inhabit the New Earth.

The free gift. Jesus paid the ultimate price on the cross, taking the wrath of God upon Himself so that we could be declared righteous. Salvation is a free gift of grace that cannot be earned through good works or religious rituals. To receive it, we must:

• Confess and repent of our sins
• Accept Christ's death and resurrection on our behalf
• Surrender our lives to Him as Lord and Savior
