ال ریس یک حرفه‌ای برجسته در زمینه‌ی بازاریابی و نویسنده‌ای شناخته‌شده است که بیشتر به خاطر هم‌بنیان‌گذاری مفهوم "جایگاه‌یابی" در بازاریابی معروف است.
او در سال ۱۹۵۰ از دانشگاه دپاو فارغ‌التحصیل شد و کار خود را در جنرال الکتریک آغاز کرد، پیش از آنکه آژانس تبلیغاتی خود را تأسیس کند.
ریس مقالات تأثیرگذاری در زمینه‌ی جایگاه‌یابی هم‌نویسندگی کرد و چندین کتاب پرفروش در زمینه‌ی بازاریابی نوشت.
در سال ۱۹۹۴، او به همراه دخترش لورا، شرکت ریس و ریس را بنیان‌گذاری کرد.
به عنوان یکی از تأثیرگذارترین چهره‌ها در روابط عمومی در قرن بیستم شناخته می‌شود، ریس همچنان از طریق شرکت مشاوره‌ای و انتشارات خود به شکل‌دهی استراتژی‌های بازاریابی ادامه می‌دهد.
