George Raymond Richard Martin is an American author born in 1948 in New Jersey. He began writing at a young age and became a comic book fan in high school. Martin's professional writing career started in 1970 with short story sales to science fiction magazines. He graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in journalism and worked various jobs before becoming a full-time writer in 1979. Martin's career includes work in television, notably on "Beauty and the Beast" and "Doorways." He is a member of science fiction and fantasy writing organizations and currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
