George Raymond Richard Martin was born in 1948 in New Jersey. He began writing as a child and became involved in comic book fandom. Martin's first professional sale was in 1970. He graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in journalism. He later worked in television, including on "Beauty and the Beast." Martin is a member of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America and Writers' Guild of America, West.
